“栗の割り板を生木のまま彫る” のが、昔からの我谷盆のつくり方。現在73歳の森口信一さんは、38年前に京都で黒田辰秋の息子・乾吉氏のもとで漆芸を学ぶ中、我谷盆に出会い魅了されました。それ以来、一生懸命に伝統的な制作法を守り続け、毎日制作に打ち込むことで、現代で唯一、原法に忠実な我谷盆の職人となっています。

森口さんは技術を惜しみなく伝え、毎月京都西山の工房と石川県山中の風谷工房を往復して教室や体験ワークショップを開催し、展示会でも我谷盆の魅力を丁寧に紹介します。粗削りで実用的、素朴で自然、飾りすぎないその佇まいは、我谷盆そのものの精神であり、森口さん自身の、堅実で集中し、飾らない生き方を象徴しています。

＊我谷盆は、江戸初期から石川県我谷村で生活道具として作られてきた伝統的な木地盆で、栗の生木を丸ノミで彫ることで、乾燥後に硬くなる特徴と独特の刻み痕を残しています。木工漆芸家で人間国宝の黒田辰秋氏がその質実剛健な美しさに注目し、復興を奨励したことで我谷盆は再び生まれ変わりました。

Morigutoban is a traditional wooden tray from Wagatani Village, Ishikawa, made since the early Edo period. Carved from raw chestnut wood, it hardens naturally and retains distinctive tool marks. Woodworker Shinichi Moriguchi, 73, has devoted his life to preserving this craft, working daily and teaching at his Kyoto and Kazatani Atelier. Its simple, practical, and unadorned form reflects both the spirit of Morigutoban and Moriguchi’s focused, unpretentious approach to life.
